FLASHBACK (psychology) - In which a memory is suddenly & unexpectedly revisited
What is Calypso & Soca?
Calypso is a style of Afro-Caribbean music which originated in the British and French colonial islands of the Caribbean in the early 20th century. It is an especially integral part of Trinidadian music. The roots of the genre lay in the arrival of African slaves, who, not being allowed to speak with each other, communicated through song.
Soca is a modern form of calypso with an up-tempo beat. There is a popular misconception that Soca is a fusion of American soul music and traditional Calypso. Hence the name "so-ca," soul/calypso. Though this sounds plausible, it is simply not true. Soca music originated as a fusion of calypso with Indian rhythms, thus combining the musical traditions to the two major ethnic groups of Trinidad and Tobago.
Soca is a style of Caribbean music originated in Trinidad and Tobago.
What is Reggae & Dancehall?
Reggae music originated in Jamaica from two similar Jamaican styles called ska and rocksteady. It can be identified by its backbeat rhythm and simple chord progressions. The lyrics are typically sung in Jamaican patois, a dialect of English. Bob Marley and The Wailers are some of the most famous reggae musicians.
Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Initially dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital dancehall (or "ragga") becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. ("Bashment" is a term used by Jamaicans to describe a style or fashion, an exciting event or even an energetic party or stage show. It is also commonly used to describe a confrontation or quarrel.
What is Steel Pan or Pan?
Steel Pan is the National Instrument of Trinidad & Tobago.
Steel Pans (steel drums) were created on the Caribbean island of Trinidad in the 1930s, but steel pan history can be traced back to the enslaved Africans who were brought to the islands during the 1700s. They carried with them elements of their African culture including the playing of hand drums. These drums became the main percussion instruments in the annual Trinidadian carnival festivities.
Steel Pan was not taken seriously. The instruments and their creators were looked down on by the upper class of Trinidad society because they were made and played by persons from the ghettos. In 1877, the ruling British government banned the playing of drums in an effort to suppress aspects of Carnival which were considered offensive.
What is Chutney & Chutney Soca?
Chutney is an uptempo song, accompanied by dholak, harmonium, dhantal and urumee, played in rhythms imported from filmi, calypso or soca. Early chutney was religious in nature. The music is a form of music indigenous to the southern Caribbean, primarily Trinidad & Tobago, which derives elements from soca and Indian filmi songs. It was created by Indo-Caribbean people whose ancestors were transported to the West Indies as indentured servants and later immigrants, during the 19th century.
Chutney soca was first coined by Drupatee Ramgoonai of Trinidad & Tobago in 1987 in her first album entitled Chutney Soca, with both English & Hindi versions of the songs. The addition of chutney-soca to the island's musical life signified a consolidation of the East Indian influence on Trinidadian culture and politics, particularly during the 1990s.
